More and more customers ask about lab-grown diamonds. Yet many still hesitate at the moment of purchase. That is normal: a diamond is an emotional and often significant purchase. The hesitation almost always comes down to the same five questions.
As a jeweller, you make the difference by answering those questions calmly, honestly and without a sales pitch. In this article we give you a clear answer to each question that you can use at the counter straight away.
1. “Is it actually a diamond?”
This is by far the most common question. The answer is simple: yes, a lab-grown diamond is chemically and physically a diamond. It is made of pure carbon, in the same crystal structure as a diamond from the earth.
The only difference is its origin. A natural diamond grows over millions of years deep in the earth. A lab-grown diamond grows in a few weeks in a specialised laboratory, under comparable conditions.
It is important to explain that a lab-grown diamond is not an imitation like cubic zirconia or moissanite. To the naked eye it cannot be told apart from a mined diamond. Even an experienced jeweller needs specialised equipment to do so.
Tip for the counter
Let the customer test a lab-grown stone themselves with a diamond tester. When the device says “diamond”, the doubt often disappears immediately.
2. “Then why is it so much cheaper?”
Customers expect a lower price to mean something is missing. Explain that the price difference does not come from quality, but from the way the stone is created:
- No costly mining is needed
- The supply chain is much shorter, with fewer intermediaries
- Production is predictable and scalable
The result: for the same budget, the customer can often choose a larger or purer stone. For many customers, that is the deciding argument.
3. “Will it keep its value?”
Be honest here, because it builds trust. Lab-grown diamonds are not an investment. Their resale value is lower than that of natural diamonds, and lab-grown prices have fallen in recent years.
Help the customer look at the question differently. Most people buy an engagement ring or a piece of jewellery to wear, not to sell later. What matters most is what the customer gets today: a beautiful, durable stone, and more diamond for their budget.
4. “Can you tell the difference, or will it discolour over time?”
No. A lab-grown diamond has a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, like every diamond. It does not scratch, does not discolour and does not lose its sparkle.
Quality is graded in the same way as for natural diamonds, using the well-known 4 Cs:
- Carat: the weight of the stone
- Cut: the cut quality, which determines the sparkle
- Colour: how colourless the stone is
- Clarity: the purity of the stone
Larger stones are often certified by an independent laboratory such as IGI. A certificate gives the customer extra peace of mind.
5. “Is lab-grown better for the environment?”
Lab-grown diamonds are created without mining. For many customers that is an important reason to choose lab-grown.
Do stay nuanced: production requires a lot of energy, and the impact depends on how that energy is generated. So avoid exaggerated sustainability claims. An honest answer is stronger than a slogan, especially with well-informed customers.
How to sell with confidence
The best sellers of lab-grown diamonds do three things:
- They are honest, including about resale value. That makes the rest of their story credible.
- They show rather than explain, with the stones in hand, a diamond tester and a size chart.
- They let the customer choose, by showing lab-grown and natural diamonds side by side.
A customer who feels well informed buys with peace of mind. And that customer comes back.
